Item 1: 

Bias in Media

• Type of bias: stereotype and discrimination
• Analysis: 

In this advertisement, we can see that there is a woman cleaning the house, while the other two men are happily enjoying beer and watching TV.

- There should be stereotype here because doing housework for a long time is considered for women only, and men do not have the responsibility to do this kind of thing. He just needs to work, to earn money outside, without helping his wife or his mother at home.

- There also has discrimination because we can see the two different actions at the same time. One is hardly doing anything, just relaxing and entertaining whereas the other is trying so hard to do the housework. The discrimination is shown so clearly in this advertisement. Furthermore, focus on the way the woman looking at men, it seems like she knows the fact, but she can not do anything to make it better. Men are laughing together and do not care of her appearance and her work.

Tỷ lệ nhiễm HIV ở nữ giới tăng cao

Tại Việt Nam, trung bình cứ 100.000 người lại có 183 người nhiễm HIV. TP.HCM đang là một trong số những tỉnh thành có lượng người nhiễm HIV cao nhất cả nước (570 người/100.000 dân).

HIV có sự chuyển dịch từ nam sang nữ

Từ đầu năm đến nay, số người nhiễm HIV là nữ giới tăng 10%. Điều đó cho thấy, HIV có sự chuyển dịch từ nam sang nữ. Nguy cơ lây HIV cho nữ giới qua quan hệ tình dục không an toàn đang có dấu hiệu gia tăng.

Thông tin trên được Phó giáo sư, Tiến sĩ Nguyễn Thanh Long, Cục trưởng Cục phòng chống HIV/AIDS cho biết trong Hội thảo Chuyên đề về y tế dự phòng khu vực phía Nam diễn ra ngày 14/12.

Gái mại dâm là đối tượng dễ bị nhiễm HIV nhất. Tỷ lệ nhiễm HIV trong nhóm gái mại dâm không đồng đều giữa các khu vực. Tỷ lệ này cao nhất ở vùng Đồng bằng Bắc bộ và Miền Đông Nam bộ.

Nhóm phụ nữ mại dâm khu vực này tăng cao hơn hẳn các khu vực khác là do hình thái lây truyền qua quan hệ tình dục không an toàn chiếm một tỷ trọng lớn.

Cụ thể tại vùng Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long nhóm gái mại dâm nhiễm HIV ở tỉnh An Giang vẫn còn ở mức 7,5%.

Trong 9 tháng đầu năm, 13.690.464 chiếc bao cao su và 16.517.518 bơm kim tiêm được phát miễn phí cho các đối tượng bán dâm, quan hệ tình dục đồng giới nhưng con số người bị lây truyền HIV vẫn ở mức cao.

• Analysis:

-        -  First is about the title: When looking through the title of the article, I see that the author aims to indicate the particular number so that he can conclude that the percentage of women infected with HIV is higher; however, there is no number showing that problem. Especially, the writer just gives a 10% percent number without any comparison with a typical year, and he also does not give any number to show the number of men that have HIV: “Từ đầu năm đến nay, số người nhiễm HIV là nữ giới tăng 10%. Điều đó cho thấy, HIV có sự chuyển dịch từ nam sang nữ.” As a result, he cannot jump to a conclusion that HIV tends to affect women more than men.

        -  Actually, in an unsafe relations, we cannot affirm whether men or women is affected from the other "Nguy cơ lây HIV cho nữ giới qua quan hệ tình dục không an toàn đang có dấu hiệu gia tăng." The writer does not illustrate this point by giving the real statistic, so somehow the reader can see that it is not a strong judgment.

       - Thirdly, as we all know, there are many other reasons that lead to HIV infections such as sex, using same needles, etc; so again, when showing the own opinion, the writer does not prove his point “ Gái mại dâm là đối tượng dễ bị nhiễm HIV nhất. Tỷ lệ nhiễm HIV trong nhóm gái mại dâm không đồng đều giữa các khu vực. Tỷ lệ này cao nhất ở vùng Đồng bằng Bắc bộ và Miền Đông Nam bộ.” There is no evidence to rush to this conclusion and to show that the comparison that he gives is right.

à In conclusion, we can see many other weak points in this article just because the writer just show his own opinions, and concludes basing on those personal point of views without proving it; even when there are some statistics to demonstrate, they are not strong enough. So we can see that this article does not have enough data and clues to state that the rate of HIV infection in women is highly increase.

Tổng thống Obama xin lỗi nữ chưởng lý California 

vì "lỡ" khen đẹp

TTO - Tổng thống Barack Obama đã gọi điện xin lỗi một nữ chưởng lý California vì "lỡ" khen bà là "chưởng lý xinh đẹp nhất" trong một sự kiện của Đảng Dân chủ.

Hồi giữa tuần này, Tổng thống Obama và chưởng lý California, bà Kamala Harris, cùng tham gia một sự kiện gây quỹ ở Thung lũng Silicon. Tại đây, ông Obama đã ca ngợi bà Harris là một phụ nữ "tài năng, tận tụy và cứng rắn, một hình mẫu của một người công tác quản lý pháp luật". Kết thúc lời nhận xét, ông Obama khen bà Harris là "nữ chưởng lý xinh đẹp nhất tại nước Mỹ".

Tuy nhiên, lời khen "xinh đẹp" nhanh chóng bị các trang blog và website mổ xẻ theo khía cạnh rằng những nỗ lực của phụ nữ chỉ được đánh giá qua vẻ bề ngoài.

Người phát ngôn Nhà Trắng Jay Carney và người phát ngôn của bà Harris đều nhấn mạnh Tổng thống Obama và bà Harris đã làm bạn từ rất lâu. "Tổng thống đã điện cho bà Harris và xin lỗi về những sự quấy rầy phát sinh từ lời nhận xét của mình. Tổng thống không hề muốn bất kỳ hành động nào hạ thấp thành quả trong công việc cũng như khả năng của bà Harris" - người phát ngôn Carney cho biết.

Ông Carney nói Tổng thống Obama "hoàn toàn biết về những thách thức mà phụ nữ đối diện tại công sở và cho rằng không nên đánh giá về phụ nữ mà chỉ dựa vào ngoại hình".

Trong email gửi báo chí, người phát ngôn của bà Harris - ông Gil Duran - cho biết bà và Tổng thống Obama đã có cuộc nói chuyện rất thoải mái. "Bà Harris hoàn toàn ủng hộ Tổng thống" - ông Duran thông báo trong email.

• Analysis: 

We can see that after praising Kamala Harris for her talented in work, Obama also says that she is beautiful at the end of his talk "ông Obama đã ca ngợi bà Harris là một phụ nữ "tài năng, tận tụy và cứng rắn, một hình mẫu của một người công tác quản lý pháp luật". Kết thúc lời nhận xét, ông Obama khen bà Harris là "nữ chưởng lý xinh đẹp nhất tại nước Mỹ". Actually they are not related to each other, and this saying may lead to the prejudice because people think that all of her attempts are appreciated just by her appearance. It fits to the fact that in general, women do not highly appreciated because of their contribution, and people mostly access them basing on their appearance. As a result, even when they succeed in doing any important things, it is not her talented that helps her, it is her beauty.
