Item 1: Story

             The two roosters and the eagle

Two roosters were fighting by a heap of dung .One rooster was stronger than the other.He fought the other rooster and drove him away from the dung ,The hens crowded round the rooster and praised him..

The rooster wanted everyone in the neighboring yard to hear of his strength and prowess. So he flew up onto the shed, flapped his wings and cried out:

" Look at me ,everyone.I beat a rooster!There is no other rooster in the world as strong as me."

At the moment, an eagle flew up , knocked the rooster down, dug his claws into him and carried him off to his nest.

• Rhetorical devices:

1. Irony: two roosters were fighting by a heap of dung
2. Climax: it begins with the fight of two roosters and then the result of if, finally the eagle comes up. 

• Moral lesson: See no further than one's nose

A Poem For Mom

 

   You are the sunlight in my day,
You are the moon I see far away.
You are the tree I lean upon,
You are the one that makes troubles be gone.
You are the one who taught me life,
How not to fight, and what is right.
You are the words inside my song,
You are my love, my life, my mom.
You are the one who cares for me,
You are the eyes that help me see.
You are the one who knows me best,
When it's time to have fun and time to rest.
You are the one who has helped me to dream,
You hear my heart and you hear my screams.
Afraid of life but looking for love,
I'm blessed for God sent you from above.
You are my friend, my heart, and my soul
You are the greatest friend I know.

Message: People are suffering the consequences of the industrialized economies. More and more strange diseases are found because people are not conscious of environmental protection. “Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind”.

The mouse, the cat, and the rooster

 

A little mouse went into the yard, she walked around and then went back to her mother.
_"Oh, mother, I saw two animals .One fringhting, the other nice.''
_"Tell me what the animals were like" said the mother.
_" The frighting one was strutting about the yard" said the mouse. "He had black legs, a red comb, goggley eyes and a hooked nose. When I past , he opened his beak, raised his foot and began to shout so loudly that he scared me stiff"
_" That's the rooster", said the old mouse. "he never does anyone any harm. Don't be afraid of him. But what about the other animal?"
_" The other one was basking in the sun. He had white neck and smooth grey feet. He licked his white chest and waved his tail gently as he looked at me"
_"You are a silly thing!" said the mouse." that was the cat"

Metaphor:

      - Little mouse: person who is young or does not have much             experience 

           - Rooster: person who looks scare but good-natured and dose not hurt anyone.

          - Cat: Person who looks gentle but merciless, wicked

Message: Do not judge someone by his appearance.

Item 1: Poem

A dream deferred

What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load. Or does it explode?  Rhetorical devices:
1. Rhetorical questions: "What happens to a dream deferred?", "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?""Or fester like a sore and then run?", etc.
2. Simile:  "like a raisin", "like a sore", "like rotten meat", "like a syrupy sweet", "like a heavy load"
3. Climax: from "dry up" to "fester", "stink", "crust", "sag", to "explode" --> an increase in the power of the verbs.
4. Continual repetition of the structure " Does it" and "Or", like vigorous questions that never end in the author's mind.
5. Rhymes: sun - run, meat - sweet, load - explode

Messages:  A dream, though deferred, can never die. It will not dry out, nor it will fester, stink or crust in the heart of the dreamer. A deferred dream, instead, will finally bust out, or "explode". In short, the author wants to tell us: always believe in your dreams, although they may seem impossible for the time being, or temporarily delayed.
Item 2: Story
Old Behrman was a painter who lived on the ground floor beneath them. He was past sixty and had a Michael Angelo's Moses beard curling down from the head of a satyr along with the body of an imp. Behrman was a failure in art. Forty years he had wielded the brush without getting near enough to touch the hem of his Mistress's robe. He had been always about to paint a masterpiece, but had never yet begun it. For several years he had painted nothing except now and then a daub in the line of commerce or advertising. He earned a little by serving as a model to those young artists in the colony who could not pay the price of a professional. He drank gin to excess, and still talked of his coming masterpiece. For the rest he was a fierce little old man, who scoffed terribly at softness in any one, and who regarded himself as especial mastiff-in-waiting to protect the two young artists in the studio above.
Rhetorical devices:
1. Symbols:
to wield the brush: to draw or to work as an artist
to touch the hem of his Mistress's robe: to reach the pinnacle of his success
2. Metaphor:
 a failure in art: someone who cannot success in art
Message:  Old Behrman was an artist who always wanted to succeed in his career but could never make it

Rhetorical device: 
Paradox: there can never be more wars than jobs, thus it is illogical that finding a war is easier than a job
Irony: nowadays, there have been so many wars and conflicts, while the unemployment rate is increasing, thus being a soldier is much better off than a scholar.
Message: The world is in a crisis. We are making so many wars, while the economy has not recovered.
