Item 2: Poem
Why
By Helen Gradison
why do we begin
if we don’t plan to finish
why do we love if
we don’t want to get hurt
why do we live if someday we must die
why do we smile
if we really hurt inside
why do we frown
when everything is upside down
why do we plan
but not take to action
why do we cry
when someday it will be alright
why do we get mad
if we really should be glad
why do we morn
when somebody is gone
why do we say hi
if we really mean goodbye
why do we
question what shouldn’t be questioned
and answer what
shouldn’t be answered?
tell me now…why?
Rhetorical devices:
- Rhyme: die - inside, frown - down, mad - glad, hi - bye.
- Rhetorical question: Why do we begin if we don’t plan to finish,
etc.
- Repetition: Why do we….if, why do we….when.
- Antithesis: begin – finish, love – hurt, live
– die, mad – glad, smile – hurt, etc.
Message:
There might be differences between our thoughts and
actions. However, just do what you like and do not ask for a reason why as
there will be no complete answer that can satisfy us.
Item 3: Story
A story about a father and son
A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his
5-year old son waiting for him at the door.
SON: "Daddy, may I ask you a question?"
DAD: "Yeah sure, what is it?" replied the man.
SON: "Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"
DAD: "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.
SON: "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?"
DAD: "If you must know, I make Rs.100 an hour."
SON: "Oh," the little boy replied, with his head down.
SON: "Daddy, may I please borrow Rs.50?"
The father was furious, "If the only reason you asked that is
so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then
you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are
being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish
behavior."
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to more angry about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?
After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that Rs.50 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
"Are you asleep, son?" He asked.
"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.
"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier" said the man.
"It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you.. Here's the Rs.50 you asked for."
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. "Oh, thank you daddy!" He yelled.
Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.
The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.
"Why do you want more money if you already have some?" the father grumbled.
"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.
"Daddy, I have Rs.100 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?
Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you."
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to more angry about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

Children really need love of their parents. Parents should spend times taking
care of them besides just working so hard.
Hi Thuong,I want to share with you my feeling after reading your entry. I really like your poem and your story with moral lessons. However, I find another messaage from the poem: we can not expplain nature, so enjoy them as indispensable parts of our lives.

Trả lờiXóaI realize that your post is the right time and you have to invest time for their work, congratulations
Trả lờiXóaThe following is my comment on your assignments:
iteam 1: i agree with Long that China and the USA are not two biggest countries. however there are two powers countries in the world.they are competitive with each other to dominate the world
iteam 2: i love your poem. you shown many rhetorical devices but i think the final sentence is rhetorical question because everyone know the answer
well done. I appreciate your entry as it's too detail. I like the poem most because it helps me realise that in life there are varous matters which we can set up the questions without finding out the answers by ourselves. :)
