Item 1: Cartoon
. Source: http://filipspagnoli.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/human-rights-cartoon-73-gender-discrimination-at-work/
. Gender discrimination
. Description:
A woman is standing in front of the place where she
can find really good careers with a board showing the slogan “ An equal
opportunity employer”
However, it can clearly seen in the picture that the
only way to get into this place is the door which has the shape of a man and
she would never have a chance to go through that door.
. Analyst:
From the picture, it is obvious that women are
treated unfairly at workplace. The working environment is short of opportunities
for women to find and apply for good jobs.
Item 2: Poem
Never say you’re too powerless
Some like the idea that to have money
Means you instantly have power
To me that proves their mentality
Is simply petite and sour
As power is the ability
To plant a smile on someone’s face
Or give a few pounds to the homeless
As your kindness they embrace
Power is dragging someone out of the wrong
And bringing them into the right
Or giving a hug to someone blue
Leading them to delight
Power is teaching a child
Something they’ll remember forever
Or letting someone know their appreciated
With a card; as light as a feather
So never say you’re too powerless
To make a change for good
It’s not a matter of what you should do
It’s a matter of what you could
Means you instantly have power
To me that proves their mentality
Is simply petite and sour
As power is the ability
To plant a smile on someone’s face
Or give a few pounds to the homeless
As your kindness they embrace
Power is dragging someone out of the wrong
And bringing them into the right
Or giving a hug to someone blue
Leading them to delight
Power is teaching a child
Something they’ll remember forever
Or letting someone know their appreciated
With a card; as light as a feather
So never say you’re too powerless
To make a change for good
It’s not a matter of what you should do
It’s a matter of what you could

Item 3: Story
The Lazy Farmer
The
rain gods had been smiling the whole night. The roads were muddy and the
potholes were filled to the brim. It was the day for the market and Raju
the farmer was riding his cart along the country road. He had to reach the
market early so that he can sell his hay. It was very difficult for the horses
to drag the load through the deep mud. On his journey suddenly the wheels of
the horse cart sank into the mire. The more the horses pulled, the deeper the wheel sank. Raju
climbed down from his seat and stood beside his cart. He searched all around
but could not find anyone around to help him. Cursing his bad luck, he looked
dejected and defeated. He didn’t make the slightest effort to get down on the
wheel and lift it up by himself. Instead he started cursing his luck for what
happened. Looking up at the sky, he started shouting at God, “I am so unlucky!
Why has this happened to me? Oh God, come down to help me.”
After a long wait,
God finally appeared before Raju. He asked Raju, “Do you think you can move the
chariot by simply looking at it and whining about it? Nobody will help you
unless you make some effort to help yourself. Did you try to get the wheel out
of the pothole by yourself? Get up and put your shoulder to wheel and you will
soon find the way out.”
Raju was ashamed
of himself. He bent down and put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the
horses. In no time the wheel was out of the mire. Raju learnt his lesson. He
thanked God and carried on his journey happily.

. Rhetorical devices:
- Parallelism:
+ The
rain gods had been smiling the whole night. The roads were muddy and the
potholes were filled to the brim.
+ He bent down and
put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses.
- Rhetorical question :
+ Do you think you
can move the chariot by simply looking at it and whining about it?
+ Did you try to
get the wheel out of the pothole by yourself?
- Message: God helps those who help themselves.
- In the 1st item, you should list out the rhetorical devices that you realize. From your description, I think that you nearly know what rhetorical devices that are used, state their name. I am confused between the paradox and the metaphor. What is your opinion?
Trả lờiXóa- I think the poem also has the antithesis device like right – wrong, blue – delight and the Simile like as like as a feather. I suggest that you should show the connection between the fact that money couldn’t buy everything and the lessons you gain from that. I mean the word “and” in your message haven’t shown clearly about this. I think it is better to say that: “Money can not buy everything; therefore, power will be in the hands of those who know how to use it right”
- About your last item, a story. I add more rhetorical device, it is the metaphor: “put your shoulder to the wheel”, it means that you should work hard and make an effort. I think the message is somehow teaches us not to give up when you are getting troubles; try your best to find ways to overcome them instead of just complaining and doing nothing for them.
- In terms of the first item, why do you just analize the meaning of the picture, not list Rhetorical devices? In my opinion, there are 2 rhetorical devices in this picture, irony and metaphor.
Trả lờiXóa- About the poem, I totally agree with Thương.
- I pretty like your story. I think you should add one more rhetorical device, it's climax which is really clear in this story. It show in some sentences like " Looking up at the sky, he started shouting at God, “I am so unlucky! Why has this happened to me? Oh God, come down to help me.” ".Besides, I don't think your mesage is right. I agree with the mesage that Thương wrote above.
In the first item, i agree that you should list the rhetorical devices not just the analysis
Trả lờiXóaIn terms of the second one, I don't quite agree with your message. In my opinion, the poem illustrates that having money doesn't mean that you have power; in fact, power comes from every little things that you can can do to bring the happiness to others.
In the last item, I agree with Thuong that metaphor should be added into this. However you did a good job and i like your post.
