+ Rhetorical devices:
- Pun: “warm–up” vs “burning”
- Irony + Overstatement: a warm-up activity produces fire to burn cheaters.
+ Message:
A funny cartoon demonstrates the humorous use of a combination of words (warm-up). Besides, it also warns cheaters of cheating.
Item 2: Poem
Friends
By Abbie Farwell Brown
How
good to lie a little while
And look up through the tree!
The Sky is like a kind big smile
Bent sweetly over me.
The Sunshine flickers through the lace
Of leaves above my head,
And kisses me upon the face
Like Mother, before bed.
The Wind comes stealing o'er the grass
To whisper pretty things;
And though I cannot see him pass,
I feel his careful wings.
So many gentle Friends are near
Whom one can scarcely see,
A child should never feel a fear,
Wherever he may be.
And look up through the tree!
The Sky is like a kind big smile
Bent sweetly over me.
The Sunshine flickers through the lace
Of leaves above my head,
And kisses me upon the face
Like Mother, before bed.
The Wind comes stealing o'er the grass
To whisper pretty things;
And though I cannot see him pass,
I feel his careful wings.
So many gentle Friends are near
Whom one can scarcely see,
A child should never feel a fear,
Wherever he may be.
+ Rhetorical devices:
- Simile : “Sky” vs “kind big smile”
“Sunshine”
vs “my mother”
- Rhyme : “while – smile” , “free - me”, “lace – face”, head – bed”,
“grass
– pass”, “things – wings”, “near – fear”, “see – be”
+ Message :
A child should not
feel a fear because his/her friends are everywhere.
Item 3: Story
Be Happy Now!
by Alfred D. Souza
We
convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a
baby, then another. Then we're frustrated that the kids aren't old
enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're
frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We'll certainly be happy when
they're out of that stage.
We
tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her
act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation,
when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right
now. If not now, when?
Your
life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to
yourself and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from
Alfred D. Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life
was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the
way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time
still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it
dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."
This
perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness
is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more
because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time
with... and remember that time waits for no one.
So,
stop waiting ... until you finish school, until you go back to school, until
you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until
your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire,
until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until
Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is
paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you're
off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on,
until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up, until you die, until
you're born again to decide that.
There
is no better time than right now to be happy!
|
+ Rhetorical devices:
- A rhetorical question: “If not now,
when?” ( line 6 )
- Simile : “happiness” – “the way”
- Climax : from “until you finish school” to “
decide that”
+ Message:
Be happy every
single moment because time waits for no one.

I have some comments for your entry:
Trả lờiXóa- For your 3rd item:
Firstly, I think the Antithesis is used in this story. For example, "finish to school" vs "go back to school", "start work" vs "retire", "get married" vs "get divorce",....
Secondly, the other rhetorical device used right there in the first para is Climax. This is the process that almost people undergo: getting married, having child, raising kids, dealing with teenagers' problems....
However, the story is easy to understand and it can help cheer up people and let them know how to appreciate their life.
Hi Lan Anh, you have a significant story. i appreciate it. but I think in the message's item1 it is exactly is a punishment for cheater, not a warn: cheating must be harming yourself. :)
Trả lờiXóaIn my oppinion the message of your item 1 is :" if you play with fire, one day you will be burned"
Trả lờiXóaAcctually i dont really get the point of this picture, i think it is a little bit vague and there is not a really moral lesson in it...
