Rhetorical devices:  1. Irony: There is huge aid,  but little of which is sent to the poor
                                  2. Antithesis: the size of corruption pile and that of pile to the poor
Message:  Corruption makes aid to the poor become more and more little

Item 2: Poem

Mother

by Leslie Kissire
If I could give you diamonds
for each tear you cried for me
If I could give you sapphires
for each truth you've helped me see.

If I could give you rubies
for the heartache that you've known
If I could give you pearls
for the wisdom that you've shown

Then you'll have a treasure, mother,
that would mount up to the skies
That would almost match
the sparkle in your kind and loving eyes

But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
as I'm sure you're well aware
So I'll give you gifts more precious
my devotion, love and care

Rhetorical devices:
1. Repetition:  structure: “ If I could give you… for each…”
2. Rhyme: me -see, known- shown, skies -eyes, aware- care
3. Overstatement: " Then you'll have a treasure, mother that would mount up to the skies"
Message: Devotion, love, care and simple things are the most precious gifts requiting love mothers give us

Item 3: Story

Homeless Man?

It was a cold winter's day that Sabbath. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car that fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked to the church.

As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet with holes all over them, his toes stuck out.

I assumed this man was homeless, and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors of the church. We all fellow-shipped for a few minutes, and someone brought up the man lying outside. People snickered and gossiped, but no one bothered to ask him to come in, including me. A few moments later church began. We all waited for the preacher to take his place and to give us the Word, when the doors to the church opened.

In came the homeless man, walking down the aisle with his head down. People gasped and whispered and made faces. He made his way down the aisle and up onto the pulpit where he took off his hat and coat.

My heart sank.

There stood our preacher...he was the "homeless man." No one said a word.

The preacher took his Bible and laid it on the stand. "Folks, I don't think I have to tell you what I am preaching about today."

Then he started singing the words to this song. "If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a word or song, if I can show somebody that he's traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain."

Rhetorical devices:
1. Climax: “There stood our preacher...he was the "homeless man." No one said a word”
2. Repetition: "If I can"
3. Chiasmus: “In came the homeless man, walking down the aisle with his head down ”
4. A rhetorical question: the title “Homeless Man?”
Message:  Without concerning who they are , help them when they need. That makes our life more happy

3 nhận xét:

  1. have a good job! I was particularly impressed by your second item. It's very significant. In the third Item, I think the author used Chiasmus the sentence: There stood our preacher.

  2. I think you didn't cover the meaning of item 3 very well. If reading your message alone, I'd not be able to understand what the moral lesson of the story is.

  3. There are a few grammar mistakes but generally, your entry is quite good.
