ENTRY 2_ TRƯƠNG ANH TÀI

ENTRY 2
Identifying Bias

Item 1: Bias in media

http://espn.go.com/olympics/summer/2012/trackandfield/story/_/id/8253821/2012-olympics-ever-entertainer-usain-bolt-again-captivates-audience

      - Type of bias: Discrimination

    - Analysis: Author used the word "steals" to refer to how Usain Bolt, a non-white athlete, achieved success in Olympic Games.  In this context, it meant that Usain Bolt won gold medals quietly and secretly.

 Item 2: Bias in research

   - Type of bias: Prejudice
  - Analysis:  This survey  was biased because the number of the sampled was too small compared with total number of over-100-year-old people around the world. Another reason was that all of the participants were from Russia, England and United States and weren't be chosen randomly.

                                                                Item 3: Bias in politics

http://www.businessinsider.com/newsweek-cover-mitt-romney-wimp-election-tax-returns-offshore-bank2012-7

  - Type of bias: Discrimination
  - Analysis: The portrait of Obama eclipses the name of the magazine but that of  Romney does not. This reflects that Obama has more force and power than Romney. Moreover, the author used "wimp"  ( = not strong, brave and confident ) with the purpose of referring to Romney; on the other hand, he used "dumb" to talk about Obama's critics, who are opposition of him. This helps Obama became outstanding and attract voters before Polling day.

  2. I have some ideas about your first item. In my opinion, you misunderstood about the meaning of the word "steal". As far as I concern, this word in the context does not show the negative meaning like that. It was used in the term "steal the stage", which is a common phrase to show that a person's performance is outstanding, better than everyone else in a show. As i understand, the article shows compliment to Usain Bolt to his winning. Therefore, i think it can not be discrimination.

  3. Thank you for your entry. It is good that this entry is well organized which is concise and easy to follow. But I totally agree with Linh in your item 1. I don't think it is discrimination and the article shows great admiration for his successful achievement when he won the gold medal.

  4. I have some thought about your second item. Personally, I don't think this research shows prejudice or any type of bias.
Because when I read the regional artical, I see that this research is conducted to find out the reason why the apiarists live long. Hence, I think the number 200 is persuavive enough, especially including 143 apiarists who are over 100 years old.
    That's just my opinion. :D

  6. I have some comments for you. I totally agree with Linh. the word " steals" doesn't indicate any types of bias. Besides, you should pay more attention to the word " again" which refer a continuous series of achievements gained by Usian Bolt --> no prejudice
About the item 2, if from your analysis, it should be assumption, not prejudice.
I like your item 3 with persuasive analysis.

  8. Hi Tai. I would like to give you some comments.
A good thing here is your work is very clear and brief, however in ur first item i think you are misunderstand the term "steal" which is used regularly in sport field, so i think this is not bias at all.

  9. Hi Tai ! Here is my comment for your entry.
I don't quite agree with you on item number 1. You insist that it is discrimination because of the title which says "Usain Bolt again steals the Olympic stage". I think you misunderstand the use of the wording. "Steal the stage" is actually a fairly impressive expression indicating the honor of the writer towards the achievement of the protagonist in his article, here we have Usain Bolt !
